Design is How it Works
(Owlery)
This project, "Design is how it works" was created through a process called relief printing. The typography was carved out backwards in lino (see below), it was then covered with ink and printed onto high quality paper. The printing press used is dated back to the 1800s, a time when printing a line of typography would have required aligning metal type in a press, and using ink to print onto paper in a similar way to relief prints.
The carving process took seven hours to complete, significantly longer than it would have taken to design it using a computer. However, through this method the print picks up the imperfections and marks of the process, producing a result which explores how the process works in a similar way to the quotation.
